Toilet plans could be flushed

A series of rows about Pinner's new toilets are threatening to bring plans for the much needed facilities to a halt.

For more than five years the village has been crying out for new toilets after the derelict lavatories in Chapel Lane car park were shut down.

But shoppers and residents will have to get used to waiting - because the demolition of the old loos and the location of the new ones have become the main sticking points.

It was hoped the unused facilities would come down before now but Transport for London (TfL) has lodged an objection to the demolition.

As for the new toilets, infighting among The Pinner Association, a group which represents residents, has caused difficulty in deciding a site.

A source told the Harrow Observer: "There has been some disagreement within the group about where the new toilets should go.

"Some want it in the same spot as the old one, which just doesn't seem viable, while others are happy to accept that going in the green near Gibbs Gillespie Estate Agents is better than nowhere at all."

Pinner councillor Lurline Champagnie (Conservative) confirmed the demolition had been postponed but suggested the site for the new toilets had already been decided.

She said: "There has been some confusion with TfL because of the proximity of the toilets to the railway but the new facilities will be on the green. It will be in full view because people want it to be in full view.

"People have waited long enough, but they believe in me and they know it's coming."

Irrespective of this however, former leader of Harrow Council, Chris Mote (Conservative), has been drafted in to help with the project.

He added: "It seems to have stalled. "I'm trying to get all the facts and information to find out what's going on so that hopefully we can get the plans back on track."

Funds handed to each ward, called Prosperity Action Team (PAT) money, will be used to cover the cost of the project but councillor Champagnie added new toilets could not be installed until an agreement is reached with TfL about the demolition of the old toilets.
