The Conservative MP will now play a big part in implimenting David Cameron's 'Big Society' agenda that features a greater reliance on charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations (otherwise known as the Third Sector) to deliver public services.

Mr Hurd, who was re-elected on May 6, previously performed the role of Shadow Charities Minister for a year and a half.

He said: "The sector is a very important part of our plans to create a stronger sense of society in Britain. I have been Shadow Minister for the sector for 15 months so I am delighted at the chance to put our ideas into action.

"They are designed to help unlock the potential for the sector to improve more lives."

Mr Hurd was re-elected with an improved majority of 37.9 per cent. This will be his first ministerial post since becoming MP in 2005 and could be the start of a long career in government.

He added: "The voluntary sector makes a huge contribution to our community in Hillingdon and Harrow, so I really look forward to the opportunity to do what I can in government to make life easier for people running these amazing organisations."
