River Spey web.jpgA PINNER fisherman has been swept to his death while holidaying in Scotland.

Police recovered the body of Dr William Richmond, who lived on his own in Albury Drive, on August 18.

A major search and rescue operation had been launched last week in the Scottish Highlands after reports that a man had been swept away at Advie Bridge, on the River Spey, about 25 miles south-east of Inverness.

Northern Constabulary eventually found the pensioner's body in the Blacksboat area of the river, more than five miles away from the bridge where he had been angling.

Dr Richmond, 68, had joined a party of anglers on a stretch of the salmon-rich river on the morning of Wednesday, 18.

The Pinner resident was wearing waders when he was swept downstream while fly fishing.

Police said the fast-flowing waters and the fact the river was in spate made the search more difficult.

Sergeant Peter Hindley, who co-ordinated the search, said: "Due to the terrain and fast-flowing waters, the search was going on in very difficult conditions.

"The river was in spate and this caused a great amount of problems."

Glenmore mountain rescue team used kayaks to search a 10-mile stretch of the river, while police drafted in a coastguard helicopter to aid their efforts.

Dr Richmond's body was recovered about three hours after his disappearance.
