Wealdstone resident's criticism of bin collection in Belmont Road
EXASPERATED neighbours in Wealdstone are fed-up and frustrated by haphazard doorstep waste collections they have branded a "ridiculous" public service.
Troy Armour, 37, said Harrow Council has failed to collect one of the three types of wheelie bin from outside his home and other residential properties in Belmont Road six separate times in the last year.
The longest stretch was the 10 weeks between December and mid-February when no-one picked up their organic waste, he said, and the most recent was on Wednesday (June 15) when the organic bin lorry drove down the street without stopping - but staff registered on council records the road had, in fact, been cleared.
Mr Armour said: "I'm getting frustrated with the council. It wasn't until 12 months ago I started having trouble.
"We're told by the council the binmen won't come onto our property but also not to leave bins on the pavement.
"There are times when they drive down the street and don't even bother to stop to have a look at our bins.
"It's getting under ridiculous. If you're going to collect the bin, collect the bin,
Mr Armour said once when he complained about a missed bin collections he was told his blue recycling bin had not been emptied because it was contaminated with electrical goods - something he thoroughly denies.
"We had cleaned the shed out but we took all electrical items to the tip," he said.
"My partner and I are keen recyclers. We even go as far as soaking labels off glass jars so the paper is better recycled.
"And I'm a horticulturist so I recycle as much garden waste as possible."
Brendon Hills, corporate director for community and environment, Harrow Council said: "We work hard at providing an excellent waste collection in Harrow which has resulted in the borough achieving one of the best recycling rates in London so it is very disappointing to hear that this resident's bin has been missed.
"We are investigating the reason for this and will be speaking to the crews on this route to re-emphasise the importance of collecting the brown bin each and every week.
"We apologise for the inconvenience missed pick-ups may have caused this resident."
