Death of the George pub in Pinner?

george.jpgPUB-GOERS in Pinner are concerned a planning application lodged by the George pub, Marsh Road, would lead to the closure of yet another historic village drinking house.

Luke Moxon, 25, lives in Cannon Lane and visits the nearby pub regularly. He said: "There would be no other place to watch the football in Pinner, after the Hand in
Hand and the Victory closed there's really no where else. It's always busy, especially when there's football on and there is a good mix of people in there. I would definitely object to the plans, I would and I think the community would, it's wrong they are building so many flats and getting rid of social places."

Two applications have been submitted for the pub which dates back two and a half centuries, one for change of use from a licenced property to offices and flats and another to extend the property and create four flats on the upper level. If the application is approved the owner will have five years before permission expires.

The manager, Yatin Patel, said it was trading well and he was unaware of any plans to close the pub.

Businessmen, David Elliott and Geoff Brown, agreed that there had been a decline in the number of pubs in Pinner recently. Mr Elliott, who runs a local website said: "As long as they maintain the character of the building and it is inkeeping with the rest of the village centre, it would be hard to argue. However, it would be very sad to see another pub in Pinner close down. There would only be two traditional pubs left if this were to happen."

Although Stewart Braddock, who owns the building, has lodged the plans with Harrow council he is adamant this does not mean the pub will be closing down soon. He said: "This is more about the long term possibilities for the business, rather than an immediate plan to change the pub. There are no plans to close the pub at the moment."

Pat Clarke of the Pinner Local History Society said: "It would be sad to see the pub go because there aren't that many in Pinner. It is part of Pinner's history, as well as the Victory, which is no longer a pub and the Queen's Head at the top of the High Street."

She added she would have to look over the plans before deciding whether the society would lodge any objections.

The pub has been going more than 250 years, since the middle of the 18th Century, but the current premises dates back to 1889 and was rebuilt after the railway bridge for the Metropolitan line cut through the site of the original building.

We need a gastro style pub in Pinner (similar to, say, the Grove pub in Ealing which is swanky and does traditional, good food). Please someone, build a nice conservatory on the side of the George, decorate beautifully and welcome families. You'd be packed - particularly at weekends and for Sunday lunch. Pinner is crying out for one (and not another pizza place!)

lets get something straight here, when are you people going to learn, when people of the ethnic community start taking over pubs it is only a matter of time before they close down and become flats or old peoples homes, the RED LION in kingsbury was one
