Peter Andre praises student's story
AN imaginative student from Harrow has been presented with an award for her story-writing by pop star and children's author Peter Andre.
Poppy Treadaway, a pupil at Heathfield School, Beaulieu Drive, Pinner, won a trophy in recognition of her story about a walk around Harrow.
The television star and former husband of Katie Price talked to pupils from over 200 schools at a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday through the Welcome to my Borough competition.
The competition was part of the Big WoW campaign, an initiative to get children walking to school, and children wrote stories about landmarks and interesting sites in their boroughs for the competition organised by Transport for London and the Mayor of London.
Eleven-year-old Poppy wrote about the views from Harrow-on-the-Hill, which she said was her favourite part of the borough to walk and mentioned some of her favourite eating places too.
She said "It was amazing when I heard my entry had been selected. I was really excited about going to the awards ceremony and it was a really good experience - especially when I met Peter Andre."
Peter Andre, who has given his backing to the Mayor's literacy programmes, said: "Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who took part in the competition.
"As a father myself, I think it is important that our kids practise reading and writing every day, and the stories the winners have come up with show what great imaginations they have and what an inspirational city London is."
Almost 6,000 pupils from 200 schools around London took part in the Big Wow walking relay, which was themed around the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "This fabulous competition gets young Londoners out and about exploring our wonderful city, equipping them with the skills and imagination they need for the future and encouraging them to be fit, healthy and independent."
