More than 50 people turned out on Saturday to see a colourful lion dance and blessing ceremony outside Peking Garden Restaurant, which owners Kim and Lai Wong hope will bring them good luck.

The takeaway shop, in Marsh Road, Pinner, opened in October last year.

Mrs Wong said: "As this is a new shop for us the dancers blessed the restaurant and kitchens and did the whole ritual. They placed tangerines outside on the pavement which are lucky in China. The word for tangerine is the same as gold so they are meant to be lucky.

"I think now more and more people are interested in any kind of ethnic festival and they really enjoy it, especially as they are able to understand it more."

The couple, who are originally from Hong Kong, also have a shop in Moor Park and have been celebrating Chinese New Year in the same way for nearly 15 years.

Two dancers work in unison inside the lion costume and perform highly skilled moves and often acrobatics.

Chinese New Year fell on Monday, January 23, this year.
