Synagogue sleep over in aid of Eastern Europe
HARDY synagogue members braved the cold weather for a sleepover to raise money for people living in freezing conditions in eastern Europe.
World Jewish Relief supporters from Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue slept in its grounds to raise money for Operation Winter Survival, which encourages people to take action against poverty in Europe and the former Soviet
Union.
Eight brave campers slept out in sub-zero temperatures after Rabbi Aaron Goldstein, of Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, came up with the idea.
Rabbi Goldstein began the evening with Havdalah around the fire and sang with his 14-year-old nephew, Joseph Colin, on the guitar.
The Rabbi said: "It felt incredibly cold in our tent; it was only three degrees, but that's so much warmer than the temperatures in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union right now that are down to minus 24 degrees at night - and we only stayed out for one night.
"World Jewish Relief's work saves lives and I'm glad I had the opportunity with our community to contribute by raising awareness and funds
to help support people through the winter."
World Jewish Relief's Operation Winter Survival campaign provides winter food packages and food cards to buy produce in the supermarket, fuel, medicines, warm clothes and bedding as well as home repairs.
